Shelly, in her own words…

My passion for franchising led Brian Schnell, my dear friend, mentor and attorney, to recommend I consider starting a consulting company to help franchisors "do it right." With the thought of the consulting company still percolating, I headed a few weeks later to Ft. Lauderdale to the Emerging Franchisor conference to deliver the keynote speech. I shared our journey with a presentation that highlighted the top 7 things we did right and the top 7 things that we didn’t do right the first time, but learned from and would benefit the audience to avoid. Afterwards, I had several attendees come up and say "you should write a book...take these lessons and expand them into full chapters.” I filed it away thinking about running a company, being a wife and a mother of twin five year old boys and thought how could I find the time. Well, about a month later I thought about this idea again and how much of my success came once I chose to franchise our business and with the help of so many that shared their stories of successes and mistakes with me. We took a business from a local success to a national success and now have begun expanding internationally. I want to share my journey for other business owners to have the roadmap to scale their business through franchising or to help franchisors scale further by implementing some new ideas. My success was not my own but rather the result of active involvement with the International Franchise Association (IFA) and the people that I met in franchising that so openly shared their good and bad experiences. Thinking of how much I got from others in helping with our successful franchise journey made we think, "How can I not find the time to write a book to help others experience the magic of franchising?" I love franchising and believe if done well, it is the best opportunity for the franchisor and the franchisees." I wanted to play a role in helping other franchisors start strong, to help play a small part in franchising being done well and enabling the start of more businesses and the creation of more jobs. Grow Smart, Risk Less not only details my experiences in starting a business from the ground up and every stumble and success I encountered along the way (by means of “Bright Ideas” and “Avoid This Pitfall” callouts throughout the book), but it also provides an index to help readers connect with the same tools, contacts and resources that helped me succeed.
